Focus
Whether producing documentaries for broadcast television or photographing the Third World, I'm always immersed in the concepts of storytelling and the nuances of communication (and lack thereof), continually engaged in capturing and expressing the emotional details of life in images and words.
I'm interested in people — faces, personalities, motivations — the underdog, the infinite curiosity of youth, the psychology of interaction. Texture. And I'm drawn toward projects that emphasize arts and culture (particularly music and dance), explore obsessions and addictions, and expose the fringes of society.
My goal is to focus audiences on subjects we often take for granted, on characters we rarely see, and to present these darker corners of the frame in a faithful and fascinating light.
National Geographic
During my 10 years with National Geographic Television I've helped create highly rated, trendsetting programs as producer, writer, videographer and photographer, including National Geographic's Most Amazing Moments, The World's Most Dangerous Drug, and episodes of Mega Structures and the popular prison series, Lockdown.
Art, Culture & Politics
In 2008-2009 I focused on music, dance and political activism. For Caipirinha Productions, I shot director Iara Lee's feature-length documentary, Cultures of Resistance, plus several short-form documentaries and arts & culture shorts — on location on four continents, predominantly in the Third World. I also shot sequences for Candace Schermerhorn's feature-length doc, The Naked Option: A Last Resort.
Photographer
An avid photographer, I've been fortunate to capture images throughout Africa, Central America, Europe, the United States, China, South Asia and the Arctic, many of which are used for large-scale site installations, product packaging and editorial features on the Web. DRS on Flickr
Critic
From 1998 to 2003 I freelanced as a music and film critic. My critiques, interviews and articles are widely published in print and online, particularly by the All Music Guide, Billboard and the Internet Movie Database. During this time I was also a staff writer for Quincy Jones' now defunct music website, Qradio.
Education
I attended North Carolina State University where I received degrees in Journalism and Psychology.
Now
In 2009 I shot sequences for the fourth season of National Geographic's Dogtown and the educational multimedia series, The Jason Project. Currently I'm in the field producing an episode of National Geographic's Lockdown.
